The Once and Future King (Matthew 21:1-11)

Sermons JohnOn Sunday, March 20, 2016, Pastor Joe Troutman preached “The Once and Future King” from Matthew 21:1-11.

Jesus humbly enters Jerusalem as King, and in less than one week he will be crucified in the place of sinners like you and me.

1. The Lord Has Need of Them (1-5)—By his  “Triumphal Entry” into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey, Jesus provides one more sign that he is the King they await, so they might repent and believe (Isaiah 62:11). Their need is our need. Just as he gave them signs they needed to believe he is the Messiah, so he provides what we need to repent and believe.

2. Hosanna (6-9)—Second Temple Judaism of Jesus’s day saw Roman occupation as a new Egyptian bondage. National zeal heightened during the annual Passover feast. Jesus’s riding on a donkey did show him coming as a king, but as one who comes to serve (See 2 Kings 9:13; Psalm 118).

3. The King Enters His City (10-11)—Jesus came to die on a cross for the very people who put him there—sinners like you and me. He will return not to be sacrificed but to judge and once for all conquer all his and our enemies.

For God’s Glory, and for Our Good (John 11:1-16)

Sermons JohnOn Sunday, November 8, 2015, Pastor Joe Troutman preached “For God’s Glory and For Our Good” from John 11:1-16.

Lazarus’s deliverance from death was, and your salvation from eternal damnation is, accomplished by Jesus Christ for the glory of the Triune God.

1. Expression of Love—Because of his love for Mary, Martha and Lazarus, Jesus stayed two days longer upon reports that Lazarus was ill. They benefited more by his delay than if he had healed Lazarus immediately.

2. Walking in the Day—Jesus knows there’s no safer plae for him to be than right where the Father planned for him to be. The divine nature of Jesus knows his Father’s secret will. There was still time for Jesus to work.

3. For Your Sake, For God’s Glory—Jesus wants his disciples to have true faith in him. His delay in going to Lazarus was for their spiritual good. Sometimes for the sake of God’s glory, people must endure suffering.

The Works Prove the Words (John 10:31-42)

Podcast Art JohnOn Sunday, October 25, 2015, Pastor Joe Troutman preached “The Works Prove the Words” from John 10:31-42.

Jesus’ works were perfectly consistent with his words which authenticate that he is the Son of God in whom you may place your trust.

1. The God Who Made Himself Man—If Jesus were not God, then he would have deserved the condemnation of the Jewish authorities. They thought he was only a man who made himself God, when he truly was God who had humbly condescended to make himself a man.

2. Works Authentication—The miraculous signs Jesus performs are evidence of his deity and Sonship to God the Father. While evidences cannot work faith in people, they do render them without excuse for disbelief.

3. Words of Truth—John’s words are God’s means to bring people to faith in Christ. The signs are in service to the word. Be alarmed when other things become central to corporate worship over the word of God.

Yesterday, Today and Forever (John 8:48-59)

Podcast Art JohnOn Sunday, September 13, 2015, Pastor Joe Troutman preached “Yesterday, Today and Forever” from John 8:48-59.

By faith, Old Testament saints eagerly looked forward to Jesus’s coming in the flesh, and by faith we look back. All those who look to him by faith will be saved.

1. Are We Not Right?–Since Jesus questioned their pedigree, they dishonor him with their question to which he does not respond. His honor comes from his Father who is their Judge.

2. Are You Greater?–The Jews ask Jesus the right questions, but their sin blinds them to his answers. God not offended by our questions, but they must be asked knowing he is under no obligation to answer us. The Jews’s question of Jesus expressed disrespect for him. When you confront your Creator and Judge, you must do so humbly.

3. Who Do You Think You Are?–Jesus seeks not to glorify himself, as the Jews assume, but his Father, whom he knows and they do not.

4. Have You Seen?–Jesus was, is, and always will be the eternal Son of God and Mediator between God and man for sinners who believe in him as Abraham did.
